A Lonely Pedestal
You put me on this pedestal
Too far above my reach
To stare and gawk in awe of me
In envy of my feats.
Though extremely flattering
Your regard for me so high
I despise this compliment
Please pass me lightly by.
This pedestal you place me on
Has hopeless expectations
And when I slip so suddenly
You ignore my imperfections.
How can I possibly tell you
Each flaw, each fault, each fear
When you no longer take them seriously
Laugh off concerns so dear.
You think I have no troubles now
They are so easily overcome?
I too have insecurities
Your jests are not in fun.
You try standing on this pedestal
And I'll esteem you with no remorse
Perhaps then you'll see this veneration
As a thinly veiled curse.
